It’s a popular opinion that the dubbed version of Cardcaptor Sakura is a blighted thing - It’s tainted, unfaithful, and watered down for the sake of the young Western audience and those who disagree are either disregarded or burnt at the stake for being even slightly fond of the audacity that is Cardcaptors.

But despite the fact that the Cardcaptor Sakura manga is still regarded as one of my all-time favourites while the few volumes I happily own are lovingly displayed on my bookshelf amongst my other most cherished titles, the anime itself played no significant part in my childhood. It never existed for me, it never registered and is still nothing more than an alternate version, a ‘what could have been’, while Cardcaptors still champions my early years of secondary school and beyond.

Even now, I think how wonderful it would be to suddenly become Sakura Avalon and treat myself to a luxurious weekend lie-in after a night of capturing mischievious Clow Cards. But if I was to wake up tomorrow as Sakura Kinomoto, I’d feel rather ripped off…
